Mancham to be guest lecturer on cruise liner

12.11.2004

Former President James R. Mancham has accepted an invitation to be a guest lecturer on the majestic cruise liner, The World, on its 10-day cruise from the Egyptian Red Sea Port of Safaga to the Seychelles.

The World was conceived to appeal to some of the millions of passengers who cruise annually, but who prefer to travel in grander style, with the comfort and convenience of having their own living room, bedrooms and kitchen - indeed, having their own private home, at sea - and for those who would like to stay in port longer than any cruise ship currently offers.

The dream for this vessel was realized in 2002, when The World was born from a shipyard in Norway and began her maiden voyage - a global sailing that will continue year after year after year.

Six hundred and forty feet in length and 43,524 tons, The World of ResidenSea redefines luxury living, whilst touring the globe. “Picture yourself waking up in your own home and being part of a resort community that is touring the globe, enveloped by wonderful shops and restaurants, a library, a theatre and art gallery with also golf and tennis facilities.” This is what the brochure says about being on this unique floating palace.

The World will leave Safaga, Egypt, on November 15 and is expected to arrive in Port Victoria, Seychelles on November 25.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr Mancham said that the cruise will provide him with time to work on a book he is currently engaged concerning his life in exile. He said that the lecture topics will constitute introductions to the history and geography of Seychelles, other Western Indian Ocean Islands as well as the East African Nations of Kenya and Tanzania which The World will visit after departing Seychelles and before cruising towards South Africa.

Mr Mancham said that his lectures will also include talks on lighter topics revolving around his poetry and personal philosophy of facing “Everyday life in a singing mood.” He confirmed that he will also avail of the opportunity to project the fact that whilst the World ResidenSea was a unique 6-star cruise ship, the Seychelles certainly has the qualities of a 6-star holiday destination. In this respect Mr Mancham said he was grateful to STMA (Seychelles Tourism Marketing Authority) for providing him with up-to-date promotional material.

It is to be noted that this is not the first time that Mr Mancham has lectured on cruise ships. During his life in exile, he was on several occasions a guest lecturer on the Lindblad Explorer when cruising different parts of the world. Since his return to Seychelles, he has lectured on The Caledonian Star and on the Hebridean Spirit.
